Is there still a solar battery rebate in NSW in 2026?

Yes, but it's mostly federal now. NSW suspended its own battery installation discount when the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries discount started, and that federal discount is worth about $252 a usable kWh on the first 14 kWh for batteries installed by 31 December 2026, so about $2,500 on a 10 kWh battery (NSW Climate and Energy Action, Clean Energy Regulator).

On top of it, NSW pays an upfront incentive when you connect the battery to a virtual power plant, and the Home Energy Saver loan lends up to $15,000 at 0% for households earning up to $210,000. Checked 1 October 2026.

When does the NSW solar battery rebate end?

The federal discount doesn't end on a single date. It steps down every 6 months: 6.8 certificates a kWh until 31 December 2026, 5.7 from 1 January 2027, 5.2 from 1 July 2027, and down to 2.1 by the second half of 2030 (Clean Energy Regulator).

So the same 13.5 kWh battery is worth about $3,350 off if it's installed in December and about $2,800 if it slips to January. The install date is what counts, not the date you sign.

Can I get the battery discount if I already have solar?

Yes. The federal discount covers a battery added to a new or existing solar system. The battery has to be able to join a virtual power plant; you don't have to actually join one to get the federal discount. You do have to join one to get the NSW VPP incentive.

Questions people ask.

What is the battery rebate in NSW in 2026?

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, about $252 a usable kWh on the first 14 kWh for installs by 31 December 2026, plus the NSW virtual power plant incentive if you connect the battery to a VPP. NSW's own battery installation discount is suspended. Checked 1 October 2026.

How much is the battery rebate on a 10 kWh battery in NSW?

About $2,500 from the federal discount for an install by 31 December 2026 (68 certificates at about $37), falling to about $2,100 from 1 January 2027. The NSW VPP incentive is extra and is set in the VPP provider's offer.

Does my income affect the battery rebate?

Not the federal discount: it has no income or property test. The NSW Home Energy Saver loan has an income cap of $210,000 combined taxable income.

Can I get the battery rebate if I'm renting?

The battery has to be installed by the property owner. Landlords can use the federal discount and the Home Energy Saver loan, which covers landlords. Talk to your landlord with the figures.

Why does a quote show two battery discounts?

Usually it's the federal certificates plus a VPP incentive from the retailer or VPP provider. They're separate programs. Ask the installer to show each one as its own line with who pays it.

Is this a government website?

No. Rebate Index is an independent reference. It links to the NSW and federal bodies that run each program and doesn't decide eligibility.
